Radio Times

When a gang kidnaps a computer genius, a woman gets killed in the scrum. Turns out that she's the wife of a senator and then … well, that's just one twist in this exceedingly strange thriller. Film buffs will go wink-wink, nudge-nudge at how the director, Sebastian Gutierrez, grafts the influence of Pedro Almodovar onto Quentin Tarantino: the first few minutes are pornography, then it's a legit thriller, then it goes all weird again, and that's before — wait for it — Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman appear as New Orleans cops. Thompson does a Frances McDormand in Fargo: she's tough, funny and has a honey of a scene on a train. She also gets her beau, Greg Wise, to play the kidnap victim. As for Rickman — his accent is as broad as Texas and it's a creepily unreal performance. Made for cable TV, this could become a cult.

Played for laughs?

RedKite from Staffordshire, 23rd June, 2005

Well, we gave it a good try, but found ourselves turning this off after about 40 mins. The plot and characters just didn't engage us. I loved the OTT slutty clothes worn by the female kidnapper, though ;-) !!

I hired this film due to the presence of Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson. They both played US cops, with atrocious US accents. We kept half expecting them to break into laughter - I know that we did! Both me and my husband spent time trying to decide whether this pair were playing the parts for laughs.

So, a big disappointment and a waste of Alan and Emma's time and talent...

Surprisingly enjoyable

A Customer from Milton Keynes, 6th January, 2010

Apart from a few dodgy (and somewhat distracting) Southern accents, this was a surprisingly enjoyable thriller. I'll admit, I rented it solely on the basis that it had Simon Baker in it, but was pleased to find it had other, far more entertaining, merits. The plot starts out as a standard kidnap caper, before a few twists along the way turn it into something more. As always, Alan Rickman excels, as he does in whatever role he's in, but for me, the star of the show was Emma Thompson. Her roller-skating, wise-cracking FBI agent stole every scene she was in. And I didn't see that final betrayal coming. A good film for a lazy afternoon or evening - as long as you aren't expecting Oscar quality, this is a fun, amusing ride.

Better than expected

A Customer from Midlands, 16th September, 2008

When this film turned up I was a bit worried as it didn't look that good. However, I was pleasantly surprised when it played. Yes it has Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman in it as two cops - not their finest acting or accents - but it has Carla Gugino who over plays the southern belle in a way that is not unkind and almost adds a David Lynch-like effect to her performance. Get this DVD and be surprised.

Not bad

A Customer from Belfast, 25th April, 2006

There are some over the top accents in the film, english actors trying to be American. There are also some very thick cops in it as well. But I suppose it`s worth watching once.

Really well thought out plot/storyline and well acted. Interesting twists and turns as the film progresses. Deserved a higher rating if the dialogue had been a bit more sophisticated and less stereotyped.
