Play with an open mind

TilmanUK from , 3rd January, 2008

At first, this game is extremely hard. The controls will p*ss you off and you'll want to excert physical damage on the nearest living being. This game takes time to get used to, but the controls really do work quite well. The story is good, the cut scenes are amazingly done and the game does become rewarding once you understand how to play it. I would suggest this game more akin to an RPG fan and casual gamer. You do require an open mind and patience to get anything out of this game - and that's when it becomes fun!

Takes time

Sinnerswake from , 9th February, 2008

This game, although hard going at first, can be very rewarding. Don't just stick it in for five minutes then send it back. That would be pointless. There is no way you can discover what a game is like in that time. I suppose it's a sign of the high reward, low patience society we live in now. I have read other reviews where people have been stuck on a particular part of the game because of the controls and i can honestly say that if you complete all of the darklands training sections first then there shouldn't be much of a problem. Yes it takes a while to get used to but it's honestly not that bad. It's great if you are renting games from here though as you can find out for yourself. You are the most important critic.

I really wanted to like this game

Fletchisawesome from from Norwich, 13th October, 2008

Ok so if you've heard of Lair, you will have heard that the controls are terrible. They fixed this though in a patch. Well they tried to fix this. All they did was let you use the analogue stick a little bit. For example, to make your dragon turn 180 degrees you flick the sixaxis upwards. As you can expect, if you need to make a 180 degree turn you need to do it quickly, not spend ten seconds waving your arms around like you're in some sort of fit. There are other instances where the controls are awkward and complicated. This is ok though because at the start of the game you have hints appear in the top-centre of the screen. At least it would be ok if they stayed up there long enough for you to recognize them. I really tried to see through the poor, gimmicky control system and actually play the game. Unfortunately the story was very dull. There was no empathy with the main character even though initial cutscenes probably intended there to be some. The story within the missions doesn't really seem to flow as well as it could do. On one mission I found myself watching a small cutscene where something important happens. Then I get a few seconds of gameplay and another cutscene. And while I'm on the subject of cutscenes, the opening sequence when you load up the game shows you sequences of the game developers logos. These can't be skipped. I don't want to watch them every time I load this game up. On to the graphics. While they are adequate nothing seems to engross me in the environment of the game. The huge structures such as bridges and fortresses don't give me a feel for the scale of the environment. Everything is a rusty colour which makes it difficult to distinguish objectives from the scenery around it. They do try to counter this with a special view mode. This view is accessed using the impractical 'down' button and you can't maneuvre your dragon while in this mode. Add this to the controls and the confusing mission structure and you get one very poor gaming experience. If I had nothing else to play, then I'd play Lair. But there are plenty of other games for you to rent so try those first.

Give Lair a change - it's worth it!

Lovefilmlover from from Harrow, 1st July, 2008

Folks, I have to agree with one of the reviewers who indicated that patience is required. But I have some good news - Sony have released an UPDATE to this game which allows the normal analogue stick to be used for flying your dragon, rather than the Sis-axis motion controls! :-) I tried the update myself (didn't take very long - just do it from within the menu for Lair) - and hoorah! Finally, the game is not only easier to control, but many of those nasty cut-scene in-game action camera angles are gone! And - the level with the Coral Snake is one of the BEST levels on any such game ever! Overall: Graphics - very good - and great show of PS3's abilities. Sound - good. Soundtrack - Brilliant - on par with Lord Of The Rings! Really memorable and quite moving. Enjoy.

such a let down!

maximumbeefy from from Birmingham, 15th June, 2008

Graphically this is an impressive title. But graphics aside this is one of the worst titles i have played on the PS3. I liked the idea of flying a dragon with a sixaxis controller but by the end of my first session on the game i could not face trying it again. There is a massive update for this title which apparantley dealt with the main problems of a basically unplayable control system - however i found that there was one mission that could not be completed simply because the control method was practically impossible to use. Its such a shame that a game with cinema style production values and an intriguing story was too frustrating to enjoy because of a terrible control system.
