Vitutal Boredom 5

andrewglasgow2007 from , 28th September, 2007

I have to be honest i have not seen such a pointless, unclear game since sonic the hedgehog on the PS3. There are no real targets and good ways to play. Its a good game if you just like the kick boxing. But if your looking for a game with a start, middle and finish then this is not it. Rent something else

Great game for the patient people

Ian Gregory from England, 5th April, 2007

This game is one that has been a long time coming for the hardcore few that eat and breathe his genre. It has some of the most amazing visuals of any fighting game out there, combined with the fact it is 1080p for the lucky few with this kind of TV setup. The reason why I state it is for the patient people, is due to the fact of the difficult learning curve. Expect to spend a few hours learning the moves in the Dojo, even then you will need to make some serious time investment to be able to pull off 50% of the moves (weeks even months), due to a very pecise timing system. If you are a dead or alive series fan, dont expect to be able to just pick up the contrioller and button bash, as this will get you absolutely nowhere. If you are somone that likes to get the most out of a fighting game, combined with outstanding visual presentation, then this is for the game you have been waiting for. 4 out ot 5 is not due to the learning curve, but the fact that there is no On-line multiplayer? The answer to this becuase of the precise timing system, the makers felt that the slight lag over the internet will affect the serious gamer - nice but what about us normal players who have some life and would just like to play our mates anyway?? Sill put that to oneside and this is without boubt the best beat-em-up on the market bar none. Enjoy.

Great Graphics, Hard Controls

Paul Calvey from Liverpool, 26th April, 2007

I rented this game with a view to buy it, i only played the game for a couple of hours and i have sent it back im not buying it now, basically the game itself looks amazing and its not 1080p its only 720p but still looks great, however gameplay said of it unless your a die hard fighting game fan you will struggle with the controls, myself i managed a few moves but some of them were beyond my finger skills.

Not a bad game but way too easy. Completed the whole thing within a couple of hours.

A brief return of the old hardcore Sega

CeladEvra from from Nottingham, 24th June, 2008

Compared to Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution on PS2, Virtual Fighter 5 has got improved graphics, more balanced character (although Akira is still annoyingly stronger than others), and many revised or new moves, which should make it all the more popular than VF4 Evo. The fact it is not is because it is hardcore as those games in Sega Saturn era: Daytona USA, Gun Griffin series etc. Saturn was beaten by PlayStation because there were too many games like these which do not appeal to lay people at all. The difficult setting is very unforgiving: you at least have to know a few moves each for upper, middle and lower attacks in addition to two defensive stances and a few getting-up moves in order to pass the arcade mode (not defeating Dural and after countless retries, that is), but that won't get you any further. Head into the dojo and learn more moves until you can use them any time you like and know when to use them. This means hundreds of hours of hard work and sore thumbs/wrist. To make the path to a virtua fighter even more an ordeal your AI opponents can learn your moves and attack patterns and come up with counter measures just a few times later. No doubt this is for hardcore fighting genre players. In fact it is so time-consuming that most advanced players only know and use one character. Mastering two is exceeding a normal person's ability. For those really want to dive deep into the game, I suggest dump the Six Axis/DS3/any gamepad and find an arcade-style controller (with a joystick and big buttons). What you get in return is fast-paced game play and various styles of martial arts moves that is so real and beautiful that you cannot see anywhere else. If you have the right attitude you can even appreciate Akira's dominating chain combos and Aoi's counter attack techniques that make you retry again and again. Playing the game is like taking on a real martial arts training: you must concentrate and sweat a lot, learn from your opponents and appreciate the Tao behind attacks and defence. Although playing games do not necessarily make you stronger or swifter, Virtua Fighter 5 helps you to appreciate Kung Fu and people who practice it better. Virtua Fighter 5 is a cold and severe Kung Fu master, who can teach you a lot. But if you do not have what it takes, better not complain.

VF5 Hits the spot

MrGiggly from from Ryton, 9th March, 2008

If you are looking for a fighting game that rewards practice and patience then this is the fella. As with all classic arcade fighters its not the deep story that keeps you coming back, its the desire to improve your skill. As mentioned by an earlier reviewer, button mashing will not get you very far. Its learning when and how to attack and defend. Its learning which are the most effective combos, and what attacks work best against a particular opponent and/or fight style. It looks pretty, running in 1080p (yes it definitely does). Animations are excellent, as are the myriad of cusomisable costume options and fight locations. Computer AI opponents are well executed resulting in a wide range of skill levels and its possible to find just the right level of competitor to spar with. Fighters (of which there are 17) all seem well balanced in their abilities. There is the usual combination of ponderous heavy hitters, lightning fast lightweights, although sega have shied away from some of the more insane fighters that grace some of the other fighting titles. Still there's plenty of scope to find a fighter that suits your style and capture your imagination. The playstation controller, whilst superb, can be a little cumbersome when attempting to pull of some of the finer moves. If you are serious about your fighters you will likely want to consider a dedicated arcade stick controller to get the best out of it. Having friends is a must. Fighting games have always been predominantly about social gatherings and where this title really shines is in the player vs player action. With no multiplayer option (Unlike the xbox 360 version) you're going to have to find some real ones if you want to enjoy this title to its max potential. Good one to rent or buy if you can find a bargain on e-bay
