Steve Martin reinvents the character of Inspector Clouseau, the hapless, bungling detective with the overwrought French accent and metaphorically huge head. With his black beret and Pepe LaPew moustache, the policeman is called on to solve a high-profile crime, making a series of hilariously clumsy missteps along the way. The story centres on a familiar murder-heist narrative. A famous soccer coach meets an untimely death by homicide, leaving behind Xania, his beautiful and famous fiancee (pop star Beyonce Knowles), who is devastated. Not only has Xania lost her intended, but she also finds that her engagement ring the fabled pink panther diamond is missing. Inspector Closeau's boss, Inspector Dreyfus (a topnotch Kevin Kline), decides to give the case to his incompetent inferior, scheming to take over the case at just the right moment in order to win the coveted Medal of Honour. With his reverent sidekick Ponton (Jean Reno) and adoring secretary Nicole (Emily Mortimer), Clouseau tackles the case as only he can, destroying evidence, fumbling names and pronunciations, insulting victims, and all the while attempting to charm the gorgeous Xania in his inimitably uproarious style.

Why, o why, o why?

alan pigott from Nottingham, 23rd February, 2006

Im a big Steve Martin fan and although I wasn't really looking forward to seeing him, Id thought he could possibly be ok. How wrong I was, this film is atrochious, Martin's Clouseau is more like Mr Magoo than the self-clumsy greatness Sellers' was. There is no consistantcy with clouseau's characteristics. All the accents and dodgy speach changes throughout (Kevin Kline's French accent totally vanishes after 10 mins) Avoid this like the plague. The only enjoyment I had from this movie was it made me immediatly watch my pink panther dvd boxset.

Avoid this film at all costs.

Steve from Manchester, England, 14th April, 2006

This film is terrible, there isn't one funny moment in it & steve martin spends 90 minutes looking like hitler & sounding like elmer fudd. If you have seen the originals do not see this, it ruins all peter sellers good work. If you haven't seen the originals then rent them instead of this poor excuse for a film. I didn't even want to give it one star.

The most definitive reason for not re-making a good film

woodnheart from , 30th July, 2007

Don't bother. Just don't bother. No seriously, just don't bother. Never has a remake of a classic film gone so terribly wrong. If you are really at a loose end for an evening you would probably have more fun reading the reviews that are slating this film, than if you actually watched it.

Terrible

Martin Harries from Wales, 25th March, 2006

Kline's French accent mysteriously waxes and wanes, first he's French and then he's pucker English - bizarre! I like Steve Martin but he just couldn't come close to filing Seller's shoes. Don't bother watching this film.

why

A Customer from Milton Keynes, 16th December, 2008

the question that springs to mind is why - why make this film, the only way it could have worked was to make it better than the original, which this most certanly is not!. If you want to watch the Pink Panther stick to the old films, a poor effort and a poor remake

Surprisingly Enjoyable

Jane Tubbs from Stroud, England, 4th November, 2008

Yes, this isn't Peter Sellars and yes it has been Americanised. However, It was a fun couple of hours. It will not stretch your brain power, but I don't believe anyone watches a Pink Panther film for the furtherance of their IQ. Give it a try and you will probably have a good giggle.

May surprise you??

stef from Brighton, 11th September, 2008

This film is actually quite funny. I wasn't expecting much at all due to the poor reviews but I was actually pleasantly surprised. Ok, Steve Martin can be annoying but there are quite a few scenes which will have you laughing out loud - properly.

Fantastic

A Customer from Peterborough, 3rd September, 2008

This was a great film, full of entertainment, and had the whole family in fits of giggles, Steve Martin made the Inspector his own character, which was a very hard act to follow Peter Sellers, but Martin did an excellent job. Highly recommend this movie, especially when you want a good night in to unwind.
