Radio Times

In director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's thought-provoking family drama, Amitabh Bachchan plays Debraj Sahai, the dedicated, no-nonsense mentor who attempts to teach the blind and deaf Michelle McNally (the irrepressible Rani Mukherji). By encouraging, coaxing and even bullying the intelligent, determined girl, he succeeds, but Debraj's own life begins to change when he is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. As he comes to rely on his former student, the pair form a deep and lasting bond. The camaraderie between the two central characters is utterly convincing, thanks to fine performances from Bachchan and Mukherji, and Bhansali's meticulously crafted film captures the determination of the human spirit with understated elegance.

The Best of Amitabh

Vinod Warrier from England, 16th May, 2005

This is undoubtedly the best Amitabh movie. He has given stunning performance. Equally praisworthy is the performance of Rani Mukherjee and the girl who acted her childhood. It's a true dedication to Hellen Keller. Kudos to Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Superb

A.Q from London, UK, 4th March, 2006

For anyone who appreciates the fine art of cinematography, this film is visually stunning. The acting and story are out of this world.. definately a must-see movie. Not for those who prefer films that offer escapism, sadly you will find it uninteresting and depressing.

Stunning Theatrical Film - from India !

A classical actor from from deep in the luscious green hills of stunning Mid Wales., 15th September, 2006

Superb film. Very moving. Theatrical. You feel you are sitting in the front row of a small theatre because the acting is theatrical rather than completely natural. The music and the cinematography (in superb black and white throughout)is of exceptional quality. Subtitles are easy to read. This is surely the finest film to have emerged from India?

Not all Black

J Todd from Aberdeen, Scotland, 17th December, 2008

In UK & USA this would be classed as a TV Movie because it takes a true premise (Helen Keller) and adapts it for TV. The title promises so much more; a philosophical depth or at least the normal high standard of Indian Cinema, but it does not deliver consistency. The acting is odd and the Directing is absolutely terrible (many idiotically inappropriate long shots that make the heroine's movements farcical) and the editing is slap-dash. There is no significant meaning given to the wieght of the title that is enough for us to believe. The one extraordinary saving grace of this film is the cinematography - it is breathtaking - beautiful, artistic, thoughtful, evocative painterly vistas full of meaning. You would watch this film because you love the subject matter or the Cinematographer and for these reasons you would enjoy it.

The concept of the film was good, puts me in mind of the old black & white english film, 'The Miracle Worker'. Rani is a very good actress, but I did not enjoy her portrayal of a Blind, Deaf and Dumb person, for a start she walked like a penguin, WHY????? Amitabh played a very good role as her teacher, but I did not feel he was compasionate enough.

Bollywood producing hollywood classic.

A Customer from Wells, England, 30th September, 2008

A very good film by Sanjay Lila Bansali, casting Amitabh and Rani Mukhar Gee. A story of a blind girl showing her life from childhood to youth. I consider this film one of the bollywood classics e.g. Anand, Mughal-e-Azam etc. But speciality of this film is that it looks like hollywood classic not a bollywood classic. Someone told me that this film is a remake of some 60s hollywood film having same story but even then it is one of the recommended films.
