Don't let it escape your attention

Bresson's spare understated style is a perfect match for this tale of a Resistance fighter holed up in a Nazi prison, determined to escape. His plans are methodical, and methodically charted by the director, but it weaves a strong web of fascination.

A Man Escaped

A man escapes from a Gestapo prison in occupied France. You know from the beginning that he will succeed, yet the film is absolutely engrossing as you watch the triumph of the human spirit over faceless brutality and apparently impossible odds. Bresson used ordinary people rather than professional actors and this makes it all the more moving. Everything is understated, nothing spelt out. A wonderful film.

Excellent film. Quite slow but well filmed and well acted with a nice ending. As with the French, everything is always understated but clever and thought provoking. What more could you want.

Taking into account the historical context in which this film was made, it provided good entertainment for 90 mins.
