Forget It's An Alien Sequel

Easily the worst film in the series however even though it sounds contradictory, it's actually worth a watch as a sci-fi film in it's own right. It's just a shame it's tarnishing the reputation of the first two by being associated with them. The effects are decent as is the ever-excellent Sigourney Weaver, but this film has a couple of comedy moments which in my opinion is pure blasphemy for a film part of the classic Alien franchise.

Vastly underrated

OK. We've all been frightened to death in our youth with 'ALIEN'. A year or two later we were frightened once more when Cameron delivered what is probably the best 2nd part sequel ever ('ALIENS'). We then all got more slightly more mature over the years and had different perceptions of Fincher's ALIEN3: some of us thought it too little of a splatter movie while others complained about it's still being a rip-off of the original. Now then, there's no question about us people in the +30 age group, is there? We simply must see ALIEN RESURRECTION, don't we? The whole saga has become part of our personal history and seeing Lt Ripley dealing with Giger's creation makes us feel young again. I'm ever so glad Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a director who, just as the rest of us, has grown from teen to twen to adult with the ALIEN-trilogy's impact on his creative soul. He doesn't copy, he doesn't steal, he doesn't try a rip-off of any kind. Instead, he carries the story further, he introduces tongue-in-cheek-moments while at the same time delivering a true, suspenseful actionmovie that is very well worth seeing. ALIEN RESURRECTION fulfils all expections, both storywise and visually. For an action flick, the cast is beyond criticism. ALIEN RESURRECTION is to be judged for what it wants to be - an entertaining modern fairy tale, a horror action movie, a splatter for the masses. In these categories, it delivers

Could have been worse, I suppose

The idea of hiring an interesting director (Jean-Pierre Jenoit) to make the fourth instalment in the Alien franchise was a promising one. As a “gimmick” I prefer it to, say, 3-D or an Alien prequel (Ripley as a child discovers strange pod-like plants growing in the cellar of her house…). However Jenoit’s main contribution seems to be his affection for “eccentric actors” -- the film is littered with gargoyles: Brad Dourif, Ron Pearlman, Dan Hedaya (Jenoit can’t resist showing us the tufts of hair that sprout from Hedaya’s back), J.T. Freeman (who has the best death scene) and Jenoit regular Dominique Pinon. Who would have thought so many oddballs would be found co-habiting in space? Other than this, it is business as usual (plot-wise) and action sequences are not really Jenoit’s strength. Worse, the script by Josh Whedon is littered with cute one-liners (“Hey, I thought you were dead” “I get that a lot”) that are totally out of character and give the proceedings a jokey ambience that does nothing except elicit groans from the audience and undermine all hopes of suspense.

It could have been a lot worse, but why isn’t it better?

A fitting conclusion to the original Quadrilogy

This film seems to have mixed reviews from most fans of the franchise - and I can see why. For me, it was an improvement on Alien3 as an overall film. The cast were better in this one, I particularly enjoyed Winona Ryder and Ron Perlman. Sigourney maintains her strong performance. I wish the filming was a bit sharper - the whole picture has a very 'yellow' tinge to it, which I think detracts. Once again, the aliens themselves have been improved again. I was surprised to see the legendary Joss Whedon criticize so many aspects of this film - but I suppose he had a much different vision of the film than it turned out to be. My negatives would be that the dialogue could have been sharper, and the human/alien hybrid is a big disappointment. But overall, far from a bad film, or even an 'Alien' film.

Awful film after all the good work from the other three

Ripley cloned, Aliens being bred, hired mercenaries get involved, Aliens break loose, you know the rest.... The final part of the Alien Quadrilogy & it is a bit of a damp squib. Appalling dialogue, especially from Ripley with some truly dreadful acting by Sigourney Weaver to match. The Aliens have evolved into a cross breed of a bull and a Velociraptor but, as in the 3rd film, just don't seem as scary. Much more graphic than the other films too but less on the suspense. It's a shame they ended the franchise (although a prequel to Alien is being discussed) with this awful film after all the good work from the other three.
