Radio Times

This contrived black comedy from My Best Friend's Wedding director P J Hogan is a curious affair. Alternating between laugh-out-loud hilarious and cringingly bad, it manages to be wildly unconventional and yet at times totally traditional. Kathy Bates is an obsessed American housewife who treks off to Britain for the funeral of her favourite crooner (Jonathan Pryce), only to become embroiled in a hunt for his murderer with the star's lover, Rupert Everett. Though this odd-couple pairing has charm, it's the sharp tongue of Bates's dwarf daughter-in-law, Meredith Eaton, that's the real delight. Unfortunately such wit is ultimately wasted, washed away in a sludgy finale of sentimentality and farce.

Surprise Winner

A Customer from Plymouth, 2nd August, 2004

When I first started watching the film, I almost groaned, another drama about lonely older woman who's husband has left her yawn yawn and then it turns into the most original and funny film I have seen this year. You might want to watch Don't Look Now before you see this as one of the references to this is superb and had me rolling. Rupert Everett is as always - amazing and Kathy Bates is on star form. If you want something different and original (willing to not take it seriously and don't look for deeper meaning like stereotypes blah blah)then give this a whirl, you won't regret it!

Most Enjoyable

This was an unexpected hoot! Get ready for some great performances, not least from a brief visit from Julie Andrews. Give it a go.

Surprisingly good

sunboy from Cardiff, 21st May, 2004

This is a treat...one of those movies that you can kick back and relax too. So so funny in places, and the actress playing the daughter in law is the best comedy performance I have seen in a long time.

Just because you havn't heard of it...don't let that put you off. A perfect Sunday movie or when you don't want to think too much about plot etc.

Sunday afternoon delight

A Customer from Fifty something from Harrow, 20th October, 2008

Ok, it is a load of tosh. But enjoyable, well acted with a great big dollop of feel good factor thrown in for good measure. I loved the 'dwarf with attitude' and Julie Andrews taking herself less than seriously. I had a good laugh.. Would recommend it - unless you are up-tight and/or a prude..

A delight

A Customer from Wigton, 10th August, 2008

Like many of the other reviewers, I too was surprised and delighted by this slightly whimsical and quirky black comedy. Kathy Bates, as ever, was superb and I loved Jonathan Pryce, haming it up as her idol Victor Fox. The daughter-in-law was brillant and very funny, the references to 'Don't Look Now' were hilarious. This unusual and unpredicable film is well worth watching and will leave you smiling.
