Annoying but still enjoyable

A Customer from Glasgow, Scotland, 14th September, 2004

This film is enjoyable, naturalistic, with good performances. However it totally spoils the positive message put over concerning equality of gay people with an appalling double standard. We get lingering shots of female nudity and heterosexual sex, but when it comes to gay sex it cuts quickly away as though afraid to upset the straight TV audience it was presumably aimed at. This both annoyed me and spoilt what was otherwise a pretty decent film.

A gay romance at the heart of the movie, between Vincent, star swimmer, and Benjamin, new boy at school with a shady past, takes second place to the het relationship between Vincent and No?mie. Pity.

Still, the movie is worth viewing despite its flaws.

Enjoyable Drama

Don from Manchester, 9th March, 2005

A thoroughly enjoyable drama if a little frustrating at times. After thinking about the DVD I realised it helped me to realise how people felt when I fell out of the closet. It had been such a scary time, I did not notice how other people felt, I don't think I cared. This is a touching film with a great story and good acting.

Disappointing for a french movie

Bruce M from Oxford, England, 10th November, 2004

Well, I guess there is no reason that the French should always produce a more sensitive movie than other countries, but I was very disappointed with this movie.

Well acted, good cinematography, and a plausible plot with dept, i.e. a young popular 'sports' star, also good at the books, coming out, or in this case being outed, and having to deal with this at his school, and with his family. A good starting point, but the subject matter was not dealt with in a feels 'true' to life manner.

Things that got to me: lots and lots of female nudity, but very little male nudity, and when showing it, in the dark. Good grief, can't we have 'equal' showing, particularly for a 'gay coming out' movie? Or, just don't show any at all. But don't keep focussing on the young ladie's breasts.

I've been in a lot of 'sports' groups, and this is the first time I've seen a group of young men, taking communal showers, and keeping their trunks on. Have things changed so much in France? When is the last time you've been in a locker room and seen the guys walk in every time after swimming, and not immediately strip off.

The other item that really bugged me was the reaction of the gay boy's team mates, and class mates. Sorry, although homophobia is certainly alive, I question that everyone (except for his two best friends), that is of this age would viciously turn against him. This is saying that young people of 15-18 are not able to form their own thoughts, and in many many cases, unless we are talking forty/fifty years ago, adolescents who know well another one who comes out (and are friends with them, or otherwise respect them), are not going to be so bothered by that person's sexuality. Yes, there will be some people who turn against him/her, but not everyone!!

So, although well filmed, decent acting, etc., the plot just did not ring at all true to real life, which was particularly disappointing for a French movie (although why I should expect more, I'm not sure, but I normally do).

Fun, cute non-tacky gay film

shaunism from from Tower Hamlets, 13th January, 2006

So many gay films nowadays are so tacky, or naf, or dreadful... this movie won't change your life, but it's sweet and fun and I didn't cringe at the plot or acting. That's saying a lot in our genre!

Realistic gay drama

Tallskin from , 2nd December, 2007

I watched this with a group of gay friends. We all liked it. We thought it was good. What we found particularly realistic was the whole school and the boy's sporting friends turning against him after he is outed, punching and kicking him whilst he was training, making it impossible for him to train - we have ALL experienced this type of behaviour from straights. Also realistic is the portrayal of the boy who effectively 'outs' our hero after their first kiss, and then betrays him because of his internalised homophobia. This is utterly real. Homophobia rots you from inside and destroys love, it makes being a happy homosexual impossible until you overcome this and fight back, both internally and externally. What was nice was that the boy has his parents to support him and his best male friend and his swimming coach. His ex girlfriend was a self indulgent bitch obsessed with herself. His homophobic brother was simply too awful to mention. Nice that is gives us a happy ending though.
