No-holds-barred comedy tour de force in which 30-something Stiller locates and courts his high school dreamgirl (Diaz), unwittingly enlisting the help of some of her more hilariously psychotic suitors. In-your-face sight gags and unapologetic raunchiness disguise a riotously funny love story that is actually very sweet. Be amazed at the impeccable casting and stellar performances of the supporting players.

Radio Times

Those kings of bad taste Peter and Bobby Farrelly (Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin) surpassed themselves with this defiantly non-PC but wickedly funny Hollywood smash. Ben Stiller plays a writer (Ted Stroehmann) who, 13 years later, is still obsessed by his prom date Cameron Diaz, even though the occasion ended in disaster. The problem is that a queue of fellow misfits have also fallen under her spell, including British comic Lee Evans and the seedy private eye (Matt Dillon) Stiller hired to find her. With gags about the mentally and physically disabled, dead dogs and serial killers, not to mention the now infamous “hair gel” scene, this is unwholesome entertainment for older members of the family. The hapless Stiller uncovers a previously unseen gift for slapstick, although none of the cast can be faulted in this area. There's also an inspired musical commentary from American cult singer — songwriter Jonathan Richman.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Broad comedy which draws attention to its tastelessness; it was among the biggest box-office successes of 1998.

I'd rather eat glass

JediSi from , 30th August, 2007

I can't believe that people thought this putrid mass of garbage was funny. Shifting the efforts at comedy among cruelty, repulsion and idiocy, 'There's Something About Mary' leaves little motivation to stay until the conclusion. Certainly, Cameron Diaz is very attractive, but that is never going to be sufficient to salvage a movie. Ben Stiller struggles rigorously to succeed within the plot, and is evidently very capable, but the film is just a washout. Very disappointing.

We've got a bleeder!!!

Chris from Woking, 25th September, 2004

A fantastic film for about the first hour, and had me in stitches. However the film really slows down at this point, and can become a bit tiresome to watch.

It does make you care about the characters, which is rare in a comedy film, where directors normally look for an extra laugh, rather than a happy ending.

don't bother with this

susie from London, England, 31st January, 2007

As I didn't really like the film there seemed no need to watch the bonus features. If you want laugh-out-loud comedy, in my opinion you'd be better off watching Anchorman or Employee of the Month.

Really really funny movie

Gazbat from , 8th November, 2008

Really really funny movie a little rude in places so be careful who you watch it with as you may have to end up explaining things to your grandma. My sort of humour so I imagine that a lot of people may think its just plain silly. Which it is but so funny at the same time.

Customer Review

A Customer from UK, 23rd June, 2008

Talk about adolescent humour. What is it about the penis, masturbation and other smut which cause mirth to anybody with a mental age over 13? Avoid like the plague.

Incredible Comedy

wedjwants from from London, 20th June, 2008

Until Anchorman, there wasn't a film that could touch There's Something About Mary for utter brilliance when it comes to comedy. Genuine moments that make you laugh out loud and just as many that will make you rewind to see again. A masterful achievment by the writers, and great performances from Ben Stiller, Matt Dillon and Chris Elliott. A must see
