A would-be hockey player (Adam Sandler) who unfortunately can't skate transforms his slap-shot into a 400-yard golf drive in this slapstick comedy. Joining the pro tour to win enough money to get his grandma's house out of hock, this unsportsmanlike sportsman enrages the staid establishment with his on-course shenanigans.

Rating of 2 stars out of 5
Radio Times

Adam Sandler has come on a bit since he made this knockabout sports comedy in which he stars as Happy Gilmore, a second-rate ice hockey player whose thuggish tactics are the only thing keeping him on the team. When his slap-shot is noticed by Carl Weathers and turned into a golfer's drive, Gilmore sees a way of earning enough cash on the fairway to save his granny's home from the depredations of the IRS. It's typical no-brainer fare, but the slapstick action does raise the occasional laugh.

Master piece

Andy Pugh from Stevenage, 17th July, 2004

This has to be Adam Sandlers greatest film. It's packed full of gags and will have you wanting more. You don't have to like golf to enjoy this film or Adam Sandler. I don't know anyone who dose not like this film. 5 stars all the way. RENT THIS FILM!!!!

A joy forever

MaxWeight from London, 13th October, 2004

This is one of Adam Sandler's 2 classics.

To me and a group of my friends this was a cult comedy before Sandler made it big.

Reasons why it's a classic
It's laugh out loud, squirt food through your nose, funny.
It's densely gag packed - like Airplane, if you don't like one gag, there'll be another along in a minute.
The fight with Bob Barker
It makes golf cool

Reasons you may hate it
It's childish, silly and puerile
It stars Adam sandler
It makes golf cool

If your idea of comedy starts and ends with Oscar Wilde style bon mots and an upper class accent, do steer clear (although, you may want to consider broadening your horizons. Go for a pint or something)

However, for silly, well written, well intentioned comedy with plenty of jokes taking you by surprise first time round, its hard to beat.

Rent it, laugh lots, watch it again and then send it back - other people need to see it too...

Another Sandler Classic

Martin from St Helens, England, 7th September, 2004

Can this man do anything wrong? I must admit that I am a fan of Adam Sandler, and this film is for anyone who falls into the same categrory. The film itself is fairly predictable but you can't help enjoy the goings on. You could almost call this Anger Management: The Prequel, from the way certain unfortunates are dealt with, but this is certainly nothing short of just good fun

Adam Sandler has still kept his unique comedious ways in this brilliant movie. A funny story with a unique storyline. I wont reveal any more as it might givr the film away so if you want to find out how spectacular it is, RENT IT OR BUY IT!

Good film, but a bit disappointing

A Customer from Farnborough, 18th June, 2008

This is definitely a funny film - especially for younger teenagers! The story line is very predictable, but that does not distract from the generally good humour in the film. After reading a lot of good reviews for this film - and many pleadings from my sons, whose friends had recommended it, I think I was expecting more. As a result, it was a bit of a disappointment. It is still a good laugh, but not good enough for 5 stars.
