The Escaflowne anime series follows the exploits of a young schoolgirl, Hitomi Konzaki, who is an ordinary enough high school student until a column of light transports her to a strange world called Gaea. Hitomi aligns herself with a young knight named Van, whom she saw in a vision prior to being transported. Together they begin a perilous journey with Escaflowne--the legendary god of protection--as they encounter both allies and enemies, most notably the evil empire of Zaibach.

Better-than-average anime story

A Customer from Southampton, 9th April, 2005

Escaflowne feels like a bit of an epic. This first DVD 'Dragons and Destiny' introduces Hitomi (the main character) who reads tarot cards which come to life. A good mix of action and mystery, and each episode builds on the former while unravelling some new elements. This DVD contains 4 episodes - I think the entire series runs to 26. The animation quality itself is quite good although perhaps not as striking as some newer animes.

One of the best series in a while.

Luke Tomlin from England, 8th September, 2007

After watching other anime series (Cowboy Bebop, NGE, AzuMangaDaioh), all of which were enjoyable, I was in the mood for another 'epic' series, one that incorporates action, character development and a good plotline. While the plotline isn't particularly deep, Escaflowne has all of those things. It's quite an old anime now, but the artwork is brilliant, and the animation, especially in the fight scenes is very good. I'd highly recommend this series to anyone who is starting to watch anime, has watched anime before or just wants something good to get engrossed in :]

Escauflowne - a must see

Paul from cardiff, 10th February, 2007

The first episode is a bit dubious being the traditional cheesy (but still great) anime. But each following episode gets better and better leaving an amazing cliff hanger at the end of the volume. If you like dragons and swords then this is for you. A possible keystone in Japanese anime.
