Woody Harrelson for Zombieland

Woody Harrelson is to take a starring role in the forthcoming horror comedy Zombieland, it has been confirmed.

The movie - which is being helmed by Ruben Fleischer for Columbia Pictures – focuses on an unlikely friendship between two survivors of a zombie apocalypse.

Harrelson - who was recently seen in the Coen brothers hit No Country for Old Men - is set to play one of the men, a zombie fighter named Albuquerque.

The 47-year-old actor has some experience with blood-spattered roles, having starred as cold-blooded killer Mickey Knox in Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers.

Harrelson also appeared on the big screen alongside Will Ferrell in Semi Pro earlier this year and has just completed work on upcoming drama Seven Pounds with Will Smith.

Whether or not the new movie can sit alongside the Romero classics of the genre remains to be seen.

Details of the rest of the cast have yet to be announced.
